Maintenance Tips to Ensure Continued Health and Safety in the Workplace as We Navigate Through COVID-19

Monday, April 27, 2020 By Niki Schillero

As we continue to stay strong at Illumetek, we’re following the motto “we’re all in this together”. We have a steady flow of business with our essential business customers, and most clients are anxious to get back to business as usual. Our employees and national partners have remained focused on the clients, while practicing social distancing and wearing the appropriate gear. Along with the rest of the country, we’re hopeful we’ve seen the worst of the pandemic.

We've all been learning how to navigate through COVID-19, and a vast majority of businesses are preparing to re-open beginning May 1st in phases. As we all try to grasp this new “normal” there are a few maintenance tips to ensure the continued health and safety of employees and customers:

  • Lighting Maintenance
Providing suitable lighting continues to be essential for your employees and customers to feel safe during their visit throughout your facility. The Global Lighting Association (GLA) explains that lighting is a vital part of life, especially in stressful times light can help comfort people, provide safety, and contribute to their well-being. Be sure to continue to have regular maintenance conducted, even during this time.

  • HVAC Maintenance
The risk of a well-maintained HVAC systems causing transmission of COVID-19 are considered to be low. However, there are some practical measures that businesses can take to further reduce the risk. According to ASHRAE disabling of heating, ventilating, and air-conditioned systems is not a recommended measure to reduce the transmission of the virus.

Essential safety systems need to continue to be maintained in accordance with regulations to ensure ongoing compliance and safety.

  • Sanitation
According to a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, COVID-19 has the ability to live in the air and on surfaces between several hours and several days. The study also found that the virus is viable for up to 72 hours on plastics, 48 hours on stainless steel, and 24 hours on cardboard.

Essential businesses are fully stocked with these materials. Employees and customers that constantly handle these items can present an increased risk for everyone. The CDC recommends using alcohol-based solutions with at least 70% alcohol.

While our country begins to re-open businesses through phases, Illumetek is here to help with any of your lighting installation, electrical and maintenance projects. Contact us anytime at (800) 644-2566 or at hello@illumetek.com
