It’s about that time of year again! The holidays are approaching, weather’s shifting, it’s getting colder and daylight hours are becoming shorter. November 1st at 2 AM EST it’ll be time to fall back an hour, yet again. Everyone loves to get that extra hour of sleep with the time change. But in terms of your facilities, how can you best prepare?
Here are a few tips that we highly recommend in order to help get your facility in great shape as we approach the end of Daylight Saving Time and take on the extra lighting hours for the holiday season.
MAINTAINENCE ON INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR LIGHTING
Walk through the perimeter of the interior of your building, this’ll allow you to note any lighting outages throughout your building. Ensure you take into consideration exit signs and emergency lighting in addition to overhead lights.
Make sure coolers and refrigeration units have all lights working properly.
Check exterior lighting, wall packs or parking lot lights. You’ll want these areas to be bright and well-lit especially with daylight hours being limited. Illuminated areas outside provide a better, safer experience for customers and employees using your facilities.
Store signage is very important as well. This is one of the first things noticed by shoppers or those passing by. Make sure all letters on your signs are illuminated to attract customers throughout the season.
SEASONAL AND HOLIDAY PREPARATION
Holiday displays may need additional power sources or spot lighting. Consider installing power poles, adjusting track lighting, or installing additional electrical outlets to provide energy needed to your displays.
Online shopping’s only going to increase more with the holidays approaching and COVID-19 impacts. Make sure lighting in shipping dock areas, parking lots, warehouses and stockrooms are completely illuminated. This’ll be important for those fulfilling online shipments and order pickups.
Update photocells, and energy management systems (EMS) to proper timing, this way you can optimize daylight while it’s available and still utilize the energy savings provided by this technology.
LIGHTING UPGRADES TO BENEFIT NOW AND INTO THE FUTURE
There’s always time to schedule an LED upgrade if your facility is eligible. This’ll allow for energy savings, cost savings, and optimal lighting for facility owners, building managers, employees, and customers.
Touchless technologies are even more popular now that we’re amidst a global pandemic. Consider installing hand dryers as a new technology or if you have them already, we can make sure everything’s working properly.
You can install UVC lighting in HVAC units to help sanitize air flowing through your facilities. UVC has properties that kill pathogens and is proven to fight against COVID-19. There are different products that use UVC technology to help sanitize your buildings and provide better air quality.
This time of year, daylight hours are more scarce when compared to the spring and summer months. Taking action on the tips that we’ve shared will fully prepare your facility for the extended lighting hours that will be required during the season.
